Polybos Digital AS ("we", "our", "us") operates the Xplore Norway mobile application (iOS and Android) and the website at xplorenorway.com. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use our services. Polybos Digital AS is the data controller for the purposes of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
2. Information We Collect
Location Data
Our app uses your device's GPS to provide location-based audio guides. Location data is processed locally on your device to trigger audio content when you are near a point of interest. We do not transmit your precise location to our servers.
Anonymous Usage Analytics
With your consent, we collect anonymous usage data such as which points of interest are viewed and general interaction patterns. This data contains no personal identifiers and is used solely to improve our content and service. You can opt out of analytics at any time in the app settings.
Locally Stored Data
The app stores data locally on your device, including downloaded audio files, cached content, your wishlist, visited places, and app preferences. This data never leaves your device unless you explicitly choose to share it.
Optional Information for Reports and Suggestions
When you submit a report about an existing point of interest or suggest a new place, you may optionally provide an email address (so we can follow up with you) and a photo of the location. This information is sent to our servers in the European Union, used solely to process your submission, and deleted once the report is resolved.
Crash Reports
We use Firebase Crashlytics (Google) to collect anonymous crash reports that help us identify and fix bugs. Crash reports contain technical information such as the type of error, device model, and operating system version, but no personal identifiers.
Anonymous Analytics
We use Firebase Analytics (Google) to collect aggregate, anonymous usage statistics such as app launches, screen views, and feature usage. This helps us understand which features are useful and where to focus improvements. No personally identifying information is collected, and the data cannot be used to identify you.
3. Information We Do Not Collect
- We do not require account creation or login

4. Third-Party Services
Our app uses the following third-party services:
- Apple Maps / Google Maps — for displaying the interactive map. Subject to Apple's or Google's privacy policies.
- Apple App Store / Google Play — for in-app purchase processing (premium features). Apple and Google handle all billing, payment processing and refund requests under Apple's and Google's privacy policies. We receive only an anonymous purchase confirmation.
- Firebase Crashlytics (Google) — anonymous crash diagnostics. Subject to Google's privacy policy.
- Firebase Analytics (Google) — anonymous, aggregate usage analytics. Subject to Google's privacy policy.
- ElevenLabs — server-side text-to-speech generation. Only the text content of points of interest is sent; no personal data is shared. Subject to ElevenLabs' privacy policy.
- On-device Text-to-Speech — audio can also be generated locally on your device with the operating system's speech synthesis. No data leaves your device for on-device TTS.
5. Purchases & Promo Codes
Premium features in the mobile app are purchased through the Apple App Store (StoreKit) or Google Play (Play Billing). All payment processing, billing, refunds, and storage of payment details are handled by Apple or Google under their respective privacy policies. We never see your payment method, card number, or billing address.
When you redeem a partner promo code (for example a code provided by a hotel or car rental company), the app sends the code itself, the platform (iOS or Android) and the app version to our server so the code can be validated and counted toward the partner's redemption analytics. No personal identifiers are sent. Apple and Google handle any refund requests directly through their support channels; we are not involved in refund processing.
6. Disclaimer & Safety
Xplore Norway provides information about places and travel routes for your enjoyment. We work hard to keep this information accurate, but we cannot guarantee:
- Information accuracy: details about places, opening hours, access conditions, and hiking difficulty may change without notice.
- Outdoor safety: hikes and outdoor activities described in the app carry inherent risks. You are responsible for your own preparation, fitness, equipment, and decisions in the field.
- Weather and conditions: mountain weather, road conditions, and seasonal accessibility change rapidly. Always check current local conditions before heading out.
- Emergency services: the app is not a substitute for official emergency services or trained mountain rescue. In Norway, dial 112 for any emergency.
By using the app you accept that you explore Norway at your own risk. To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Polybos Digital AS is not liable for any injury, loss, or damage arising from your use of the information provided in the app or on this website.
7. Governing Law & Jurisdiction
These terms and your use of the app and website are governed by the laws of Norway, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules.
Any dispute arising out of or in connection with the app shall be submitted to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Oslo, Norway. This does not limit any mandatory consumer protection rights you have under the law of your country of residence — if you are a consumer in the EU or EEA, you may also bring proceedings before the courts of your home country.
8. Data Storage and Security
All user preferences and cached content are stored locally on your device using the operating system's standard secure storage (Core Data on iOS, Room Database on Android). Our server infrastructure is hosted in the European Union.
9. Children's Privacy
Our service is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect any personal information from children.
10. Your Rights (GDPR)
You have the right to access, correct, or delete any personal data we hold about you. Since we do not require an account, the only personal data we may hold is information you voluntarily provided in a report or suggestion (such as an email address or photo). To request access or deletion of this data, contact us at info@xplorenorway.com.
You can disable anonymous analytics at any time in the app settings. All locally stored data can be removed by uninstalling the app.
